Elsie Poteet

Mrs. Elsie Mae Lackey Poteet, 96, of Schertz, Texas and formerly of Barnwell, SC, passed away on October 29, 2021.

Born in High Shoals, NC on March 15, 1925, she was the daughter of James Thomas Lackey and Annie Horne Lackey.  She was a 1942 graduate of Bessemer City (NC) High School.

She married Wallace R. Poteet in 1945 and continued living in Bessemer City until 1954 when the family moved to Barnwell, SC.  She worked at Amerotron before becoming a full-time homemaker.  She was very active at Hagood Avenue Baptist Church, serving as a longtime Sunday School teacher, Girls Auxiliary leader, Vacation Bible School teacher, and in numerous other capacities. She fostered and raised two children, Dawn and Mark Wade in addition to her daughter, Drue Renee. In her later years she worked with children with special needs at Barnwell School District 45's Foster Grandparent Program. Known for her kindness, creativity and sense of humor, she was beloved by her family, friends and the many youth to whom she devoted her time throughout her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Renee Poteet Hill (Walter) of Schertz, TX; foster son Mark G. Wade (Cindy) of Columbia, SC; foster grandchildren Amanda Moody (Paul Copson) of Easley, SC; Donovan Wade of Johns Island, SC; and Hal Wade of Columbia SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents; brothers Vester, John, Harvey and Wade Lackey; sisters Eva Shelton and Alma Sisk; and foster daughter Dawn Wade Moody.


A graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 7, at 3 p.m., at Long Creek Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery in Dallas, NC.  Sisk-Butler Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family requests any memorials be sent to Hagood Avenue Baptist Church, 1144 Hagood Avenue, Barnwell, SC 29812.
