Joseph H. Critchley, 85, died February 5, 2010, at Citrus Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 12, 1924, in Paterson, New Jersey, the son of Joseph and Georgina Critchley. During the depression, Joseph helped his father run the family business, Critchley Candy, in Paterson, NJ. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He retired from Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) in New Jersey after 22 years as a dispatcher. Joe moved to Inverness in 1984 from West Milford, NJ. He and his wife, Anne “Jackie”Carpenter Critchley, split their time between Inverness and Union Grove, NC. He was Baptist, he loved to square dance and was a member of the Flutter Wheels in West Milford. Joseph was a handyman extraordinaire. He enjoyed the bluebirds on his farm as well as astronomy. In his younger days, he was quite a roller skater and ice skater.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Anne of Inverness, daughter Jo Anne Haynes of Seffner, FL, and son James Critchley and his wife Rachel of Gastonia, NC; four grandchildren, Cheryl, Donnie, John and J.C.; five great-grandchildren, Toni, Andrew, David, Parker and AnnaMarie.
Funeral service will be at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home Chapel, Bessemer City, on Friday, February 12, 2010, at 3:00 PM with Dr. Charles Brawley officiating.
Visitation will be one hour before the service.
Interment will be in Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery with full military rites by Bessemer City American Legion Post 243 Honor Guard.
